Creating An Indian Style Kitchen To Make The Most Of Home Cooking

Home cooking is a big part of Indian culture. We love to entertain for guests as well as cooking delicious food for our families at home. The family meal is also the ideal chance to share our experiences from each day and check in with one another, creating a focus on Indian values and strengthening the bond within our family. So considering food is such an important element of our daily lives, it only makes sense that we should have the ideal kitchen to prepare it in. Here’s how you can put together an Indian style kitchen that’s perfect for cooking, eating and more.

Firstly, plan the layout of your kitchen.

The first thing you’ll need to do is plan the layout of your kitchen and imagine how it could look once it’s done. The way it looks will, of course, be a point to consider, but it’s also important to make sure the layout you’ve chosen is practical for the way you use your kitchen. If you like to create interesting recipes with lots of freshly prepared ingredients, you’ll need to ensure you have plenty of counter top space for the likes of chopping, mixing and seasoning. There should also be additional space (and of course electricity points) for any additional appliances you may need to plug in as you cook. Counter tops and locations for permanently fixed appliances – such as your cooker and fridge, are the basis of your kitchen, so planning these is a great place to start.

Once you know you’ll have enough space to use your kitchen productively, it’s time to decorate.

When you’ve planned where everything in your kitchen is going to go, you can get creative with your décor. Firstly, what colour would you like to paint it? For a kitchen, you may wish to use bright, fresh colours – just like you’d use fresh and energising ingredients. Popular choices include yellow, blue, green, orange, or anything that inspires you to feel creative and refreshed. You could even take inspiration from your favourite colourful foods, such as vibrant fruits, vegetables or spices. In addition to decorating the walls, you’ll also need to choose your ideal flooring. We recommend a floor that’s easy to wipe clean – as the kitchen is of course at higher risk of spillages and splatters. Try a linoleum or laminate floor that looks great but is also easy to maintain.

So, your floors and walls are looking their best. What about furniture?

Next, you’ll need to pick some furniture to suit your kitchen. This will depend on the size of your kitchen, so it’s up to you to determine how much you can include. If you have a separate dining room, you won’t need a full dining table, so consider a smaller breakfast table where your family can sit and eat informal meals together. Storage is also a necessary item if you don’t have enough built into your counters. Try shelving units or pantry style cupboards to provide extra space. Traditionally, Indian style furniture is often made from wood, so use it for your furniture and decor to give your kitchen that recognisable look. For extra decor, pick some Indian style decorations and storage, such as utensil pots or serving trays. These will be practical for your kitchen while enhancing its Indian theme. For authenticity, check out local Indian manufacturers and independent sellers who create products in traditional Indian style. There may even be some here at Floma that would be perfect for your kitchen!

You could even take a look at flea markets or antique vendors to find real pieces of India’s past.

Next, comes the appliances. What do you need?

To keep on cooking those delicious meals for your family, your kitchen will need to be functional as well as just looking good. Appliances are an important part of putting together the perfect kitchen and could even be considered part of the decorative process, especially if you’ve chosen great looking models. The basics include a refrigerator and cooker for storing and cooking your food, however you may expand your kitchen’s amenities to include a dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine, juicer – or anything else you’d use on the regular. Choose models that are functional while still fitting in with your chosen style to give your kitchen the best effect.

By taking things step by step and taking practicality and style into consideration, your kitchen should be starting to look exactly how you imagined it.

Taking things step by step as you decorate or remodel your kitchen is a great way to break it down. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed by the task as a whole – you’ll simply need to focus on getting each section completed.  When it’s done, you’ll have a kitchen that perfectly represents you, your style and even the way you like to cook in your kitchen – exactly the way you imagined it.

However you decide to decorate the kitchen in your Indian home, the key is to stay true to your style and make sure it’s functional for what you use it for – while also reflecting Indian style of course!
